2011 Gotham Award Nominations Favor ‘The Descendants’ and ‘Take Shelter’

There is much argument about which precursor award is considered the first precursor of Awards season. The Cannes Film Festival Awards certainly have an impact on the Awards race, but not significantly. The National Board of Review is usually the first Awards body that considers all films (although they will be beat by the New York Film Critics Circle this year). However, the Independent Filmmaker Project’s Gotham Awards are the first group to use the typical awards format with the nominations coming a month before an official awards ceremony.

Today the small committee of 21 individuals that chooses the nominations for the Gotham Awards announced their 2011 nominations. As usual, the list was both Sundance and Oscar-friendly with festival film Martha Marcy May Marlene and Oscar hopeful The Descendants leading the nominations with three each, although the former failed to receive a Best Feature nomination. The Gotham Awards do not recognize overall best performances from actors, actresses, or directors. Instead they select the best “Breakthrough” work of the year.

It is exciting to see two up and coming directors that Film Misery had the opportunity to interview this year both received nominations. Mike Cahill [interview] of Another Earth and Evan Glodell [interview] of Bellflower were both nominated as Best Breakthrough Director. There were also nominations for the casts of Beginners and Take Shelter.
