The first awards ceremony of the year occurred tonight when the Gotham Independent Film Awards gathered indie celebrities in Manhattan to recognize this year’s best. The big winners of the night were The Tree of Life and Beginners, which tied for Best Feature and Kelly Duane and Katie Galloway’s Better This World, which took home Best Documentary. The ceremony was hosted by Oliver Platt and Edie Falco and streamed live online via the Independent Filmmaker Project website. Throughout the evening appearances were made by Tilda Swinton, Patton Oswalt, Charlize Theron, David Cronenberg, and numerous other celebrities who have films making the rounds this year.
The Gothams are a fun way to start the Awards season, but they do not have any particular impact on the overall race. This may be the only precursor award for Best Feature that Mike Mills’ Beginners receives, but I have a feeling this won’t be the last we hear of The Tree of Life. Felicity Jones beat out Elizabeth Olsen for the Breakthrough Actor award, making her the indie it girl of 2011 (for now).
Tomorrow the Independent Spirit Award nominations are announced, so expect many of the same names to be read once again. Until then check out the full list of Gotham Award winners below.
