It seems like every year there is a fight to be the first group to announce their film award nominations with groups like the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review fighting to be the trendsetters. However, no group gets their nominations out earlier than the Independent Filmmaker Project’s Gotham Awards. The Gotham Awards seek to recognize independent filmmakers and actors, with a special group of awards designated to recognize the biggest breakthroughs of the year.
The 2012 Gotham Awards were announced today with a nice mix of studio supported independent films and smaller, lower budget features. Both Bernie and Moonrise Kingdom received nominations in the Best Feature and Best Ensemble Cast categories while Beasts of the Southern Wild earned dual nominations for Breakthrough Director and Breakthrough Actor. Every other film received only one nomination, making this one of the most diverse groups of awards that we are likely to see this year.
One of the more curious nominations is Melanie Lynskey who received a nomination for Breakthrough Actor despite having 50 feature films and television shows to her credit including mainstream releases like Flags of Our Fathers and Up in the Air. Apparently her performance in Hello, I Must Be Going was strong enough to make people feel like they were discovering her for the first time.
View the complete list of nominations below. The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, November 26th and are likely to be live-streamed online, which they have done in previous years.
