Apparently there will be one awards ceremony this year that 12 Years a Slave won’t dominate. Despite earning the most nominations, Steve McQueen’s Oscar frontrunner was shut out at the 23rd Gotham Independent Film Awards tonight with voters favorite the Coen brothers’ latest film Inside Llewyn Davis for the top prize and Matthew McConaughey and Brie Larson for the main acting awards.
Fruitvale Station was the only film to earn more than one award with two. Matthew McConaughey’s victory will likely be the first of many this awards season for the Best Actor frontrunner. Other winners like Brie Larson of Short Term 12 and Michael B. Jordan of Fruitvale Station may not appear on too many other awards stages this year, but tonight’s ceremony might give them a slight boost.
