51 Movies to See Before the 2012 Oscar Ceremony

Launch the Full List of Movies to See

If you are keeping track, there are currently 116 days until the 84th Academy Awards, which will debut on Sunday, February 26, 2012. That gives you plenty of time to see the numerous films that are likely to be recognized on that evening and the weeks leading up to it. Keeping with tradition here at Film Misery I have compiled another list of movies to see before this year’s Oscar ceremony. The rankings are determined by how many Oscar nominations a film is expected to receive based on the Film Miser Oscar predictions. The points are given as follows:

  • 5 pts for being a frontrunner in a Top 8 category
  • 3 pts for being a frontrunner in a Technical or Other Category
  • 1 pt for being an alternate in any category

The list currently has 51 films, but that number will decrease as we get closer to the Oscars. When nominations are announced on Tuesday, January 24th the list will likely end at about 30 films. The top 20 films on the list are:

  1. The Artist
  2. Moneyball
  3. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
  4. The Help
  5. J. Edgar
  6. The Descendants
  7. War Horse
  8. The Tree of Life
  9. Hugo
  10. Midnight in Paris
  11. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
  12. Albert Nobbs
  13. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
  14. Take Shelter
  15. My Week With Marilyn
  16. The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn
  17. The Iron Lady
  18. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  19. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  20. Shame

28 of the 51 films are currently available either in theatres or on DVD. Of those I have seen 18.  How many have you seen?

I’ve seen 9, which is odd because usually I’ve seen more than that at this point of the year, one thing that’s prevented me from seeing more films of the list is, aside from a lot of the films being in limited release, is that I’ve avoided a lot of the big blockbuster releases. I’m still surprised The Help is a serious Oscar contender.

I have seen 12 out of the 51 on your list and I should see another 10 or so from the list within the next 3-4 weeks. I have seen 67 movies that qualify for this year’s Oscars and it’s too bad that some smaller films just never get a chance like 13 Assassins and The Arbor.

  • What do you think about TT3D: CLOSER TO THE EDGE? I was pretty mush ignoring it, until it got that British Independent nomination last week. Does it have even a remote chance of being nominated as Best Documentary? (If it does, I have to see it this week before it leaves local cinemas).

    • I’d say a very remote chance. I think it was more of a case of a British group recognizing a British film. It didn’t really get much play from other Documentary groups, so it will have to do some major campaigning to catch up.

  • 19 here so far.
