The 2009 Gotham Independent Film Awards will be presented via live webcast this Monday, November 30 at 7:30pm ET (4:30pm PT) on UStream. This is the first year this feature has been available as the Independent Filmmaker Project has teamed up with UStream to present its 30th Anniversary Awards.

Nominees for this year’s best feature award include Amreeka, Big Fan, The Hurt Locker, The Maid, and A Serious Man. The Hurt Locker and A Serious Man are making serious runs at Best Picture at the Oscars and a win at the Gotham Awards could get momentum swinging their way. However, a win for one of those two films might go against the IFP’s ideology of recognizing films that don’t receive mainstream awards attention.

For the Best Documentary category, the only film that received a Gotham nomination and is also eligible for the Best Documentary Oscar is Food, Inc. The other four films, which include Good Hair, My Neighbor, My Killer, Paradise, and Tyson, missed out on the Oscar shortlist.

Alternative Film Guide lists some feature films, documentaries, and performers who have gone on after a Gotham Award to widespread awards acclaim:

Among the Gotham feature and documentary winners and nominees that have gone on to receive wide acclaim elsewhere are Frozen River, Into the Wild, Half Nelson, Iraq in Fragments, Trouble the Water, Capote, Murderball, and Sideways.

Previous Breakthrough Actor recipients include Oscar contenders Melissa Leo (2008), Ellen Page (2007), Rinko Kikuchi (2006), Amy Adams (2005) and Catalina Sandino Moreno (2004).

The Gotham Independent Film Awards will be announced on Monday, November 30th at 7:30pm ET. Be sure to check them out on UStream.
