11th Hour Golden Globe Predictions
Posted On: Monday, December 14th, 2009 | Posted By: Alex Carlson

I had meant to have this up earlier, but all of the precursor hub bub kept me from getting it posted. The Golden Globes announce their nominees in just a few hours and it’s time to make some predictions.
Best Motion Picture (Drama)
The Hurt Locker
Up in the Air
Precious
An Education
Inglourious Basterds
I’m assuming they will put Up in the Air in drama, rather than comedy. Other than that I went with pretty safe choices here. The biggest surprise would be no Hurt Locker. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Avatar sneaks in over Inglourious Basterds.
Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)
(500) Days of Summer
Nine
The Hangover
A Serious Man
Julie & Julia
This was admittedly a pretty weak year for comedies and Nine was the only musical that could even be considered. My wild card pick here is Julie & Julia, which didn’t get great reviews outside of Meryl Streep. One wild card that could sneak in over Julie & Julia is the other Streep movie It’s Complicated.
Best Actor (Drama)
George Clooney – Up in the Air
Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart
Morgan Freeman – Invictus
Colin Firth – A Single Man
Jeremy Renner – The Hurt Locker
I’m going with the same front five that I have for my Best Actor Oscar predictions. A possible wild card would be Christopher Plummer for The Last Station.
Best Actress (Drama)
Carey Mulligan – An Education
Sandra Bullock – Blind Side
Gabourey Sidibe – Precious
Helen Mirren – The Last Station
Abbie Cornish – Bright Star
On the ladies side of the aisle, there is a lot more diversity between the comedy and drama actresses. Maggie Gyllenhaal from Crazy Heart of Natalie Portman from Brothers could easily sneak in for a nomination in this category. My guess is they would replace Abbie Cornish.
Best Actor (Comedy or Musical)
Michael Stuhlbarg – A Serious Man
Daniel Day-Lewis – Nine
Matt Damon – The Informant!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt – (500) Days of Summer
Bradley Cooper – The Hangover
The first four were at one point Oscar possibilities and had strong performers in popular comedies. However, one thing the Globe never ceases to do is please the masses, which is why I included Bradley Cooper from The Hangover as the fifth slot. A true wild card might be Paul Rudd from I Love You, Man.
Best Actress (Comedy or Musical)
Meryl Streep – Julie & Julia
Marion Cotillard – Nine
Sandra Bullock – The Proposal
Zooey Deschanel – (500) Days of Summer
Evan Rachel Wood – Whatever Works
The last pick on my list is completely out of the air, but I’m not sure how else to fill the category. It would be easy to choose another star of one of this year’s chick flicks, but I don’t think the Globes would go for more than one.
Best Supporting Actor
Christoph Waltz – Inglourious Basterds
Stanley Tucci – The Lovely Bones
Alfred Molina – An Education
Alec Baldwin – It’s Complicated
Christopher Plummer – The Last Station
This seems like another obvious category, but a lot of these could easily be misses. Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover could sneak in, as could Anthony Mackie from The Hurt Locker – completely depending on the tone of the Globe nominations.
Best Supporting Actress
Mo’Nique – Precious
Anna Kendrick – Up in the Air
Penelope Cruz – Nine
Julianne Moore – A Single Man
Mariah Carey – Precious
I couldn’t imagine the Globes passing up the chance to nominate a star like Mariah Carey, even though she is not the most deserving of a nomination. Other possibilities would be any of the other ladies from Nine or Precious.
Best Director
Kathryn Bigelow – The Hurt Locker
Jason Reitman – Up in the Air
Lee Daniels – Precious
James Cameron – Avatar
Clint Eastwood – Invictus
Best Screenplay
Up in the Air
Precious
(500) Days of Summer
Inglourious Basterds
A Serious Man
I’m not even going to venture guesses in the non-major categories. What do you think? Am I way off? Right on? What are your predictions? Check back for the winners tomorrow morning!
