‘Up’, ‘Coraline’ Score Big at the 2010 Annie Awards

Up gets some unneeded momentum and Coraline finally gets recognized for its beautiful score at the 2010 Annie Awards, which recognize the best from the year in animated feature films. The Awards ceremony was held on Saturday night and hosted by William Shatner.
The six awards were shared by three different films with Pixar’s animated Best Picture nominee Up taking home the top prize. This seems to put a halt to some of the buzz that Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox might pose a threat for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. As I always say, anything can happen, but the momentum is undeniably on Up‘s side.
I re-watched the film Coraline, one of my 2009 top ten, and was stunned that it’s beautiful score did not receive more attention in this year’s precursor season. In my opinion the Bruno Coulais and They Might Be Giants score for Coraline stands with Michael Giacchino’s score for Up as the two greatest of 2009. The Annie voting committee agreed with me and they gave the top prize to Coraline.
Coraline took home 3 of the 6 nominations, Up took 2, and Fantastic Mr. Fox took 1. View the complete list of winners after the jump.
