A Plethora of ‘Activity’ at the Box Office This Weekend

paranormalactivity1

The long reign of the Saw franchise opening at number one has been ended thanks to a far superior horror film. Paranormal Activity finally jumped to number one after more than doubling its theatre count this weekend. The low-budget thriller took in $22 million in its 5th week, bringing its total to over $60 million.

Saw VI came in at number 2 this weekend with an unimpressive $14.8 million, making it the lowest premiering Saw film in the franchise. It’s not surprising that each successive Saw film should earn less and less. I’m surprised that their run has lasted this long (admittedly, I’ve only seen the first two). Other premiering films Cirque du Freak and Astro Boy, did less than expected business, but unsurprising as the reviews for each were rather rotten. Amelia just missed the top 10, but did pretty well in the limited number of theatres it was released in.

After the jump are the week’s totals compared to my predictions:

1) Paranormal Activity – $22 million
My Prediction: #3 with $17 million

2) Saw VI – $14.8 million
My Prediction: #1 with $20 million

3) Where the Wild Things Are – $14.42 million
My Prediction: #2 with $17.5 million

4) Law Abiding Citizen – $12.71 million
My Prediction: #5 with $10.5 million

5) Couples Retreat – $11.1 million
My Prediction: #7 with $8 million

6) Astro Boy – $7.02 million
My Prediction: #4 with $12 million

7) The Stepfather – $6.5 million
My Prediction: #10 with $3 million

8) Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant – $6.35 million
My Prediction: #6 with $9 million

9) Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs – $5.6 million
My Prediction: #8 with $5.5 million

10) Zombieland – $4.3 million
My Prediction – #9 with $4 million

I did pretty well on my first ever Box Office predictions. Paranormal Activity threw me off, but it looks like it did for a lot of people as we underestimated its continuing popularity. People really are seeing it more than once. I’m really proud of myself for getting the amounts pretty much correct for the last two, I just got there places wrong.

Look for the Michael Jackson concert movie This Is It to take over the number one spot next week while Paranormal Activity stays strong at #2.
