American Cinema Editors Nominate ‘War Horse,’ ‘Descendants’ and ‘The Artist’

Many of the usual suspects made appearances today when American Cinema Editors (A.C.E.) announced their 62nd Annual Eddie Awards for the years’ best-edited films (via THR). The list of nominees included editors for major Oscar front-runners The Descendants (Kevin Tent), The Artist (Anne-Sophie Bion and co-editor/director Michel Hazanavicius) and Hugo (lifetime Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker).

A.C.E. favorite Michael Kahn was the most prolific Eddie nominee this year, receiving a nod for each of the two Spielberg projects he worked on last year, The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse, a film that has failed to make the cut (see what I did there?) in other notable Guild Award shortlists.

Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter, who won both Eddies and Oscars last year for editing The Social Network, received nominations again for their work on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Acclaimed comedic works like Bridesmaids (William Kerr and Michael L. Sale) and Midnight in Paris (Alice Lepselter) also received nominations in their respective categories.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams, one of the most successful documentaries of 2011, garnered Eddie recognition for its editors Joe Bini and Maya Hawke. Its competition comes from Freedom Riders and George Harrison: Living in the Material World. This is particularly noteworthy, as none of these films appears on the Academy’s shortlist of eligible 2011 films.

  • If it wasn’t already the case, this definitely puts the kabosh on ‘The Tree of Life’ getting a Best Picture nomination. It also puts the kabosh on me using the word “kabosh.”
