‘Amour’, ‘Shame’, and ‘Tinker Tailor’ Dominate European Film Awards

We’re still waiting for the American precursors to kick into more deliberate gear, with the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics set to decide their winners in the coming week. Until then we’ve had the fresh breathe of independent film awards announcements, and now one of the prominent foreign awards to count in on the action. To little surprise but plenty enthusiasm, Amour was the big winner of the ceremony, taking home all four top prizes for European Film, European Director (Michael Haneke), European Actor (Jean-Louis Trintignant), and European Actress (Emmanuelle Riva). The film’s been a dark horse in the awards race since its Palme d’Or win at Cannes earlier this year, and though we’re still waiting to see how American audiences on large accept the film, it’s becoming more and more likely to spoil a handful of things come the morning of Oscar nominations.

Much less likely to have any affect on the current awards races, however, are the technical wins of last year’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in European Composer and European Production Design, and Shame in European Cinematographer and European Editor. Though they may feel like leftovers at this point in the game, they’re still uplifting carrots towards two films which were particularly given the cold shoulder during last awards season. The remainder of awards were distributed amongst a scattered group of lesser knowns, the most recognizable of which being The Hunt, which director Thomas Vinterberg accepted European Screenwriter for, along with Tobias Lindholm.
