In news of the unnecessary, ComingSoon.net reports that Timur Bekmambetov is preparing for a sequel to last year’s Wanted. Bekmambetov is a great up and coming director, but this is a complete waste of his talent. Don’t get me wrong, I rather liked the first Wanted. It had an excellent combination of adrenaline and intelligence that so many action movies are lacking these days. It’s just not a film that needs a sequel.
WARNING: Spoilers below…
Apparently, Bekmambetov is in talks with Angelina Jolie is in talks to reprise her role as Fox because “they’ve found a way to bring her character back.” Jolie’s character clearly dies in the first film, so they’ll probably have to invent a ridiculous explanation for why she’s still around. Not only did her character die, but EVERY character died in the first film, besides James McAvoy’s protagonist. I’m reminded of the line in Hamlet 2, when Catherine Keener inquires “doesn’t everybody die at the end of the first one?” and Steve Coogan responds “I have a device.” Except in Hamlet 2 it’s satire.
No word yet on whether or not McAvoy will reprise his role (I’m assuming he will). Here’s looking forward to another sequel to get pseudo-excited for. This is getting exhausting.
