When it comes to predicting the Oscars for Art Direction, the Art Directors Guild is of little help. They break down their awards into three categories, five nominations each, based on the type of film. This makes it quite difficult to find a crossover between an Art Directors Guild nomination and an Oscar nomination. Traditionally, the Academy favors films that the ADG places in their Period Film and Fantasy Film categories.
Missing from the list of nominees is Rob Marshall’s musical adaptation Nine. Marshall’s only other two films have both won the Oscar for Best Art Direction, but that trend seems destined to stop. It is very rare for a film to miss out on a nomination from the ADG and go on to get nominated for the Art Direction Oscar. The films that are most likely to get an ADG and an Oscar nomination are Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Inglourious Basterds, District 9, and Where the Wild Things Are.
After the jump is the list of ADG nominations.
