‘Avatar’ Continues Domination Over January Releases

With tonight’s Golden Globe win, James Cameron is destined to make another billion dollars on his film Avatar. The film won the weekend for the 5th time in a row as it barrels its way towards Cameron’s other record breaking film Titanic. It set the record for highest 5th weekend of all-time and secured a spot as the third highest grossing film of all-time, surpassing Star Wars.

However, Avatar wasn’t the only big news of the weekend. The Hughes brothers’ The Book of Eli earned an impressive $31.6 million making it the 4th highest January opening weekend of all-time. Also, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel has become the fourth highest grossing film of all-time to never reach number one. While Avatar has been thrilling audiences and breaking records, The Squeakquel has sneaked its way to an almost $200 million total.

The other premieres this weekend The Lovely Bones and The Spy Next Door did modest business, taking in $17 million and $9/7 million respectively. Don’t expect either of those films to stay in the top five for more than one or two weeks, however.

Look for Avatar to reign once again next weekend over newcomers Extraordinary Measures, Legion, and The Tooth Fairy.
