Earning $48.5 million this weekend, James Cameron’s Avatar has now surpassed Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to become the highest grossing 2009 release. It has also smashed the record for highest grossing 4th weekend of all-time, almost doubling the numbers of Titanic. The film has also positioned itself at the 7th highest grossing film domestically of all-time, just short of The Phantom Menace. Avatar is just behind The Dark Knight as the second fastest film to $400 million domestically. Next weekend I’ll probably start with an all-new list of records Avatar has broken.
In other news, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel has become the 6th highest grossing film of all-time to never reach number one at the Box Office. Nobody probably cares about that interesting tidbit, but it’s interesting to note that even though Avatar is controlling the Box Office, other films are still doing well. Americans are spending a lot of money on movies these days.
Sherlock Holmes hangs on to the number 2 spot at this weekend’s Box Office with The Squeakquel at number 3, both earning just over $16 million. The new release winner of the week was Daybreakers, which came in at number 4 with an approximate $15 million. Youth in Revolt and Leap Year did meager business, earning less than $10 million each.

Look for Avatar to reign for a fifth week next weekend with The Book of Eli coming in second.
