James Cameron’s Avatar became the highest worldwide grossing film of all-time earlier this week and it further distances itself from the pack with a $30 million haul this weekend. This brings its total worldwide gross to $2.04 billion, the first film ever to break $2 billion. Avatar is now just shy of Titanic‘s $600 million+ domestic gross, but is expected to catch up this coming weekend.
The new releases this week had a combined total that did not even reach Avatar. Mel Gibson’s action thriller The Edge of Darkness, which cost over $80 million to produce, made a disappointing $17.1 million. The romantic comedy When in Rome squeaked by with a dismal $12.1 million, barely beating the family comedy The Tooth Fairy.
So now the question is – which film will be the one to finally de-throne Avatar? Next week the best possibility is the John Travolta action film From Paris With Love. I think the best possibility, however, is the massive ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day, which is scheduled for a February 12 release date. The starpower of that film combined with the fact that it’s romantic comedy season, should give it what it takes to overtake the Na’Vi.

Look for Avatar to reign supreme for an 8th week as February begins.
