One of the most acclaimed films to come out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Beasts of the Southern Wild from newcomer director Benh Zeitlin. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year and has been announced to play out of competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Fox Searchlight picked up the film for distribution and plans to release it in a few theatres in June before it expands gradually throughout the Summer.
The film received its first official trailer today via Vulture and it looks stunning. Despite its child protagonist and fantastical narrative elements, Beasts of the Southern Wild is clearly intended for adults. This is evident in the pull quotes chosen for the trailer featuring reviews from established critics like Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter. The story follows a young girl who goes on a search for her mother after facing her father’s ailing health. Adding some fantasy to the story are prehistoric creatures called aurochs, who were released as the result of environmental changes.
If the film gets the same positive reception at Cannes as it does at Sundance, then Fox Searchlight may choose to mount an Oscar campaign behind it. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Beasts of the Southern Wild will be released in the U.S. on June 27, 2012.
