British Independent Film Award Nominations Recognize ‘Shame’ and ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’

The U.S. independent film landscape has the Spirit Awards, the Gothams, and numerous other bodies who recognize the work of American independent artists. British filmmakers have the less cleverly named British Independent Film Awards.

This year there may be more attention paid to the BIFAs, thanks to phenomenal entries from English filmmakers. Steve McQueen, Lynne Ramsay, and Paddy Considine are among the directors recognized and Tilda Swinton, Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Gary Oldman, Vanessa Redgrave and Tom Hardy are among the actors. Even a documentary sneaked into the Best Feature nominees by this outside-the-box thinking group.
