Film Misery

These are my top 5 DVD releases this week and a bit of uncalled for Oscar prognostication from yours truly…

This week is low on offerings, starting off 2012 on a rather low note in my book as I offer my opinions in one of the most cynical posts I’ve ever written.

Avoid sitting in front of the TV this week. It’s Christmas. If you want to watch a film with your family this break, head off to the theater where you’ll find Scorsese, Spielberg, Fincher, Reitman, or Cameron Crowe waiting for you.

‘The Tree of Life’ is a solid film from a great director that could have been much more.

‘The Tree of Life’ hits the shelves for the arthouse fans, and ‘The Green Lantern’ continues the Marvel madness!

‘Submarine’ is one of the most daring films of the year. And it does so without flaunting inorganically.

The two lead actors cleverly play back and forth in a sort of Yin-Yang of stoicism versus charm. But just like everything else in the film, it generically feels half-baked.

Although I am very much excited to see how the Occupy Wall Street stirrings will effect the box office of a politically minded thriller. It should be interesting; but honestly nothing peaks my interest as much as these top five films.

‘Thor’ is still a hell of a lot of fun and alarmingly sane for such a cheesy, otherwordly story.

It looks like this is the end of the early year releases and the beginning of summer films finding their way to DVD.

The film works on many levels as a sports film, a family film, and an all-around American drama. And the script is the driving force.

‘Win Win’ is the winning release according to my book, although the competition was unbearably thin.

The film has as many, if not more, problems as it has positive virtues. As much as I think this film may be fruitful for conversation, it isn’t a film that I ever hope to see again.

This week–and the past few weeks for that matter, have more or less consisted of what I label the “shit season” making its way to small screens of primarily American homes.

‘Source Code’ is a modern film in every sense of the word, the good and the bad.

This week has an interesting variety of films, some new releases, blu-ray, and a triple-header from the Criterion Collection.

Jean Cocteau has conjured up a completely magical film, beautiful both aesthetically and sincerely. The Criterion Collection loves this film, too.
