Director Ronald Maxwell is probably rivaled by only Ken Burns when it comes to cinematic authority on the American Civil War. Maxwell is the acclaimed director of the 1993 epic Gettysburg along with the underrated 2003 film Gods and Generals. His latest film covers the same subject matter with which he is quite familiar, but does so in a slightly different way and on a slightly different scale. Copperhead, coming to select theatres in two weeks, looks at the conflict from the perspective of Northerners who were opposed to war and given the nickname which gives the film its title.
Film Misery has the exciting opportunity to giveaway a Copperhead movie prize pack that will include movie cash, a signed poster, and a copy of the book that inspired the movie. More information on that giveaway is coming Monday. In the meantime I thought I’d share the trailer for the film and this interactive app that the studio provided.
I went through a brief Civil War fascination in my early college years that inspired me to devote many hours to Maxwell’s two previous films. I really enjoyed both Gettysburg and Gods and Generals, primarily for the fantastic performances from their all-star casts. Copperhead has a much lesser known cast that includes Francois Arnaud, Ryan Doucette, Lucy Boynton, Billy Campbell, and Peter Fonda. However, that doesn’t dampen my anticipation.
Check out the trailer below in the embedded app, which includes a trivia game (I got 8 out of 10), a behind-the-scenes gallery, and recipes for Civil War era dishes.
Copperhead will be in limited theatres in the U.S. on June 28, 2013.
DISCLOSURE: Film Misery received the giveaway items in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.
