‘Dear John’ Ends the ‘Avatar’ Streak

At the beginning of last week when I posted the poll about which film would finally topple Avatar at the Box Office, the Channing Tatum/Amanda Seyfried romantic drama Dear John wasn’t even on my radar. I didn’t think the stars were big enough or the film was marketed enough to make a big splash. However, last Thursday I was guest speaking for a high school class and when one student brought up plans for the weekend a teenage girl said “Dear John opens tomorrow. That’s all that matters.”

Dear John, which was based on a novel by Nicolas Sparks (The Notebook), earned an impressive $32.4 million in its opening weekend, which was about $10 million more than Avatar. However, despite the “setback” Avatar still managed to earn the highest 8th weekend gross of all-time, narrowly beating out Titanic.

Also premiering this weekend was the John Travolta action film From Paris With Love, which limped into the box office with a dismal $8.1 million. Bad reviews and word of mouth quickly deflated the film’s potential box office as it came in third place for the weekend.

Next weekend look for Avatar to hold onto second place while Valentine’s Day takes over the number one spot and Dear John slips to third or fourth.
