‘District 9’ Cruises to the Top of the Box Office

District 9

It was a good weekend for new releases. The good District 9 dethrones the bad G.I. Joe this week at the Box Office and 4 of the new releases this weekend found their way into the top 10.

District 9 made a better than expected $37 million, impressive for a small budget Sci-Fi thriller that nobody had heard of at the beginning of the summer. Also, turning out a good week was The Time Traveler’s Wife, opening in third with $19.2 million and one of the highest per theatre averages.

The other two new releases that debuted in the top 10 had slightly less than stellar hauls. The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard premiered in 6th with a little over $5 million. The film had a pretty strong marketing campaign, but still didn’t manage to do much. I imagine it was because a lot of its intended audience, males aged 16-25, went to District 9 instead.

The other film that underperformed this week was a film that I had been really rooting for: Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo. Granted it did not get a full theatrical release and still managed to break the top 10, which is pretty impressive, but it’s per theatre average was below that of District 9, Julie & Julia, G.I. Joe, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and most of the other new indies. However, I think that the issue is that Ponyo is a word of mouth film. I anticipate that its popularity will increase in the coming weeks.
