End of Summer Oscar Prediction Update – Part 1

campion

This really could be the long overdue year of the woman. For the director category, there are three women in the top 5 and a third right on the edge with a shot at getting a nomination. Never before has there been more than one woman at a time nominated for Best Director. If three could get in it would be a long overdue nod to the great things women directors are doing in the film industry.

Other big changes in this prediction update are the big boosts for Precious and Up in the Air. I thought it being end of the summer and before the Toronto Film Festival, it was time for some no guts, no glory balls out predictions. I am in the process of reading the book Push, on which Precious is based, and my confidence in this film is rising. It’s an unlikely frontruner, but I think that with the subject matter, brilliant cast, and production team, this will be a film to reckon with.

Updates are complete in the big eight categories. Coming later this week will be updates in the rest of the categories including all-new Best Documentary and Foreign Film categories.

  • Brilliant cast? I know what you were going for, but I have to call you out for the following:
    A) Mariah Carey is in it
    B) Lenny Kravitz is in it
    C) Sherri Shepherd is in it (funny, but a great cast ensemble member?)

  • Vince

I agree with all your picks with the exception of your backing on The Road. Since it was delayed a year and the trailer makes it look reminiscent of a Roland Emerich film I doubt it is Oscar quality. But other than that great picks!
