European Film Awards 2011 Give Top Prize to ‘Melancholia’

View the Updated Precursor Charts

Probably the best batch of Best Picture nominees you will see this year were present at the European Film Awards last night. With films like Le Havre and Melancholia in the race for Best Film and performances like Tilda Swinton, Michel Piccoli, and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the acting categories, this proves to be an eclectic and tasteful group. They were also slightly behind as last year’s Oscar Best Picture winner The King’s Speech took in a few of last night’s awards.

The only winner that is likely to have any play in the Academy Awards race is Tilda Swinton, who took home a prize for Best European Actress, and Chico & Rita, which took home the prize for Best Animated film. The latter’s chances seem increasingly likely as it was one of 18 submissions for the Academy’s animation category in a particularly weak year. It could very well sneak in for a nomination with 5 spots to fill.
