European Film Awards Gives Top Prize to ‘White Ribbon’

whiteribbon

It seems like a pattern that every year there are two or three foreign films that are adored by critics and fight it out for the top awards at the end of the year. In 2008 it was Gomorrah, The Class, and Waltz With Bashir. In 2007 it was 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days and Persepolis. Curiously, these foreign favorites never end up winning the Best Foreign Film Oscar.

This year the soon-to-be snubbed contenders are Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon and Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet. Both films premiered at Cannes and both have been favorites for many precursor awards that have been trickling in. The latest boost comes for The White Ribbon as it takes the top prize at the European Film Awards and Haneke takes the directing award.

There is not much Oscar significance to the European Film Awards as some of the selections were released statewide in 2008 and most of their picks end up getting snubbed by the Academy. However, they do seem to have a good idea of the general cinematic opinion of European Foreign Films.
