Film Misery 2009 Final Oscar Predictions!

UPDATE: I will not be live blogging this year, but I will be updating the winners live and keeping track of results.

MY SCORE: 17/24

I have not been invested enough in the 2008 film season due to other commitments, so FilmMisery will kick off in full at the beginning of March for the 2009 season. Anyway, here are my final Oscar predictions for this Sunday’s ceremony.

Best Picture
PREDICTED WINNER: Slumdog Millionaire
ACTUAL WINNER: Slumdog Millionaire

Duh. Not only should this film win, statistically speaking, but I think that this is the nominee that really deserves to win. The world being the way it is right now, we could use an uplifting story like this.

Best Director
PREDICTED WINNER: Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire
ACTUAL WINNER: Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire

Long awaited and well-deserved for Mr. Boyle.

Best Actress
PREDICTED WINNER: Kate Winslet – The Reader
ACTUAL WINNER: Kate Winslet – The Reader

In her own words from Extras, Kate Winslet said World War II movies have “Oscars coming out of their arse.” It took a WWII movie for Kate Winslet to be a frontrunner.

Best Actor
PREDICTED WINNER: Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
ACTUAL WINNER: Sean Penn – Milk

Sean Penn has basically told people to vote for Rourke. The Academy likes to award comebacks as well as first time nominees.

Best Supporting Actress
PREDICTED WINNER: Viola Davis – Doubt
ACTUAL WINNER: Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona

This is where I’m taking a bit of a gamble. I don’t think the Academy liked Vicky Cristina Barcelona as much as the critics did. However, it’s clear they had respect for Doubt.

Best Supporting Actor
PREDICTED WINNER: Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
ACTUAL WINNER: Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight

Another duh. It would be a crying shame if he lost.

does the Oscar deserve our time and attention??

    these are the facts

  • Yeah, I think this year’s nominations have decreased my usual passion for the Oscar ceremony. At least Hugh Jackman should keep things interesting.

  • Brandon Cooley

The only thing that Slumdog Millionaire deserved was best cinematography. It shouldn’t have nominated for anything else. The Dark Knight and Wall-E deserved to be nominated for best picture and The Dark Knight probably should have won.
