First 2009 Precursor – Gotham Independent Awards

The Gotham Independent Awards don’t necessarily give films a huge boost, but it doesn’t hurt to get as many precursor nominations as you can. Last year, of the five nominees none went on to get nominated for Best Picture, but that is not always the case. In 2005 both Brokeback Mountain and Capote received Gotham Awards nominations for best feature and went on to Best Picture nominations. However, the average over the past 4 years is about .5 out of 5 films that go on from a Gotham nom to a BP nom.

However, a more interesting indication provided by the Gotham Awards is the Best Documentary Feature category. Last year 3 of the Gotham nominated documentaries went on to get Oscar nominations. On average over the past 4 years, 2.5 out of the 5 films nominated go on to get a Best Picture nomination. This year’s nominees include several films that are on my shortlist of possible best doc nominees, but it soon is going to be time to revamp those predictions.

With 10 Best Picture nominees this year it is more likely that a few of the Gotham nominees go on to Best Picture noms. Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and The Coens’ A Serious Man both received Gotham nominations and those films are speculated to be locks for a Best Picture nomination this year. However, the other three nominations are unlikely to find themselves hearing their name in any category come nomination Tuesday.
