I have been tweeting the Gotham Award announcements throughout the night and the ceremony has just wrapped up. The ceremony featured some excellent presenters including Sam Rockwell, Patricia Clarkson, Meryl Streep, Oliver Platt, Ellen Burstyn, Willem Dafoe, Anthony Mackie, Rosie Perez, and many more. On top of the main awards there were honorary awards given out to actors Natalie Portman and Stanley Tucci, producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and director Kathryn Bigelow.
The whole ceremony was a lot of fun as the stars realized that they were free to curse and make raunchy jokes. The recurring joke of the night was about Willem Dafoe’s penis, which was featured in the disturbing independent film Antichrist. Rosie Perez asked if it was really his member featured in the film to which Dafoe nodded. Rosie then acted flustered and remarked “ooh, Mr. Dafoe.”
The big winners of the night were The Hurt Locker, which took home Best Documentary and Best Ensemble Performance and Food, Inc., which took home Best Documentary. The Hurt Locker has been gradually gaining steam at the Oscars and while this does not necessarily mean anything, it does confirm that there is real support behind this movie and it may have what it takes to make a run for Best Picture. It would be foolish of me to make this call based on the Gotham Awards, however.
