‘Harry Potter’ Stupefies Competition

harrypotterbo

There was no competition for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at this weekend’s Box Office as it hauled in $79.5 million. The runner-up, Ice Age 3, did less than a quarter of what HP and the HBP did, bringing in only $17.7 million. The five day total for Harry Potter is $159.7 million, which is the largest that the series has seen. However, it’s not exactly showing signs of catching Transformers 2, which had a $200 million five-day opening.

Bruno fell from first to fourth, which was probably affected by its less than positive word of mouth. And The Hangover, continues to kick ass, even managing to move up one spot from last week, and hang onto the top 5 in its 7th week.

The best news from the weekend is that (500) Days of Summer made a killing in the few cities it played in, bringing in a per-theatre average of over $31,000. What did I say? The summer’s breakout hit? Just wait until it gets wide release.
