Jackson Continues to Rake in the Dough Posthumously

Michael Jackson’s This Is It unsurprisingly topped the box office this weekend as it opened in very wide release. However, despite the hype it barely topped $30 million in its premiere week, which put it at or below similar openings for fall movies.

The movies that have shown staying power this fall may not be the movies that you think. Paranormal Activity increased its total box office take to over $80 million and took second place in its 6th week. 3rd place this weekend was Law Abiding Citizen, which increased its rank by one point in its third week, despite mostly negative reviews. Where the Wild Things Are, which opened the same weekend as Law Abiding Citizen, dropped to 6th this week. Also increasing their rank this weekend were the poorly reviewed films The Stepfather and Amelia.

However, one film that did significantly well this weekend and actually has good reviews is Lone Scherfig’s An Education, which got an expansion this weekend. It had the highest per theatre average of the week and earned just over half a mil.

Look for the Holiday movie season to kick off with Disney’s A Christmas Carol taking over at number one next weekend.

** NOTE: Apologies for the lack of activity lately, but my personal life has been ridiculously hectic. Things should get back on track this week.
