Joel McHale to Host the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards

The Oscar producers had better act soon and find a good host before they let the other Award shows outdo them. Film Independent has announced today that they have tapped comedian Joel McHale to host the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards Ceremony. Joel McHale is most easily recognizable as one of the stars of NBC’s “Community” and most easily enjoyable as the host of “The Soup” on E! His resume has been steadily growing with upcoming roles that will include Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids 4, Mark Mylod’s What’s My Number?, and David Frankel’s The Big Year. The Indie Spirit Awards will air on IFC on Saturday, February 26 at 10:00pm ET/PT.

I’m not the biggest fan of NBC’s “Community,” but most of my dislike comes from the writing. Joel McHale is most in his element as the host of “The Soup,” especially when he engages in off-the-cuff banter with guest celebrities. McHale is very well versed about celebrities, which should make his gig at the Spirit Awards the perfect opportunity to dish out some jokes at the expense of the A through D-list celebrities that will be present. The Spirit Awards have always seemed to me like the bachelor party the night before the wedding and McHale is a great choice to host such an event.

This news should hopefully spur the producers of the Oscars to make their long-awaited hosting announcement. We now know that Joel McHale will be hosting the Spirit Awards, Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson will be hosting the Gotham Awards, and Ricky Gervais will be hosting the Golden Globe Awards for a second time. The only two remaining question marks are the Oscars and the Critics Choice Awards (the SAG Awards usually do not have a host). The Oscars are going to have to do pretty well to find a potential host who could do a better job than the above mentioned individuals. My prediction is that they might be leaning towards a singing and dancing host to be different and to play up the country’s current obsession with shows like “Glee.” Based on the news that the Academy has already sought out Hugh Jackman, this would indicate that is the case.

The Independent Spirit Awards will be broadcast Saturday, February 26, 2010 at 10:00pm ET/PT.

  • Perfect choice. Community is amazing.

  • I want Tina Fey to host the Oscars.

  • What if a director or someone who knows a lot about movies hosts the Oscars instead of a popular actor or comedian. I like Baldwin, Martin, Stewart, and the rest of them, but I don’t really care about their stand up and in my opinion people like that don’t belong at the Oscars. The people there should be nominees and others who have made contributions.

  • Andrew R.

I’ve only seen 2 Community episodes-don’t ask me which. The 2nd one was A LOT better than the other, but I’ve heard the show has been improving over time. And the characters are genuinely great.

    The Soup is hilarious, though.

If the Academy does what they do last year for the ceremony, I’ll be annoyed. The Twilight stars were given so much attention that you’d think “New Moon” was a BP nominee.

How can you not be a fan of Community!?!?!?!?!?!?!?1?!?!
