John Landis and Simon Pegg to Team Up for ‘Burke and Hare’

Today in movie news that makes me happy, John Landis has announced that his next leading man will be Shaun of the Dead himself. Simon Pegg will be playing the leading role in Landis’s next film Burke and Hare – a horror-comedy about a duo of 19th century murderers who sold the bodies of their victims to the Edinburgh Medical College for dissection. Sounds like a golden opportunity for Landis-style horror-comedy a la An American Werewolf in London.

It has been 11 year’s since John Landis directed a narrative feature and the last several he did (Susan’s Plan, Blues Brothers 2000, The Stupids) were pretty bad. This seems like just the boost he needs to get his career back on track. One of his first films and possibly his most popular is An American Werewolf in London. Burke and Hare seems like it will go along the same lines and play out as a tongue-in-cheek horror film.

Simon Pegg has become one of the most sought after comedic actors working today. He is the type of actor who you can put into a supporting role and automatically improve the quality of any movie. When he is a lead role, he works best when he writes his own dialogue (i.e. Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz). However, I think that under the direction of Landis and with his own rapier wit, Pegg can make something very funny.

Now the question left open is who will fill in the role of the other murderer. The obvious choice would be Nick Frost, Pegg’s co-star in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. However, I would see Landis and the producers opting for someone more box office friendly. Any ideas?
