‘Kick-Ass’ Stumbles In Opening Weekend

After months of internet speculation and one week of back and forth reviews, the general population decided not to follow the fanboys into the movie theatre this weekend to see Kick-Ass. The R-rated action-comedy disappointed with a mere $19.75 million three-day opening after early estimates put it in the mid to high $30 million range.

Preventing Kick-Ass from taking the number one spot was Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon, which jumped back to number one in its 4th week of release. The film, which has received great word of mouth and positive reviews, earned $20 million bringing its total to $158.62 million. In these early months of the year, before school has gotten out, family films still own the box office. Add that to the fact that How to Train Your Dragon has received the best reviews of the year and its success makes sense.

The other big opening of the weekend was Death at a Funeral, the remake of the 2007 British comedy, landed with $17 million. It finished 4th after Date Night. Clash of the Titans dropped from 1st to 5th to round out the top 5 this weekend.

Recount showed that Kick-ass is actually #1 with a 200K difference between Kick-Ass and Dragon, and maybe Dragon won’t be #1 next weekend since aside from The Back Up Plan The Losers is getting released this weekend. Hopefully Dragon and Kick-Ass are hits.

I’m hoping the box office totals pick up, because I want a sequel. The first film was flawed, but good. A sequel could be awesome.
