Unsurprisingly Couples Retreat has come out on top at this weekends Box Office. The movie had a great ad campaign, a commercial genre, and most importantly very bankable stars including Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Kristin Davis, Jason Bateman, and more. These factors trump the fact that the film received dismal reviews from critics because the movie-going audience at large just doesn’t listen to reviews.
The real winner at this weekend’s Box Office is the micro-budget horror/thriller Paranormal Activity. Despite playing on fewer than 200 screens the film made an enormous $7 million dollars and came in fifth this weekend. The film has reached over 1 million demands and will be opening wide starting next weekend. Expect huge business still to come from this underdog horror movie that keeps receiving accolades.
The only film that compared to Paranormal Activity’s per theatre average was An Education which opened on four screens to an average take of $40,500, just $4,000 less than the former film. Also with a pretty decent gain this weekend was A Serious Man, which increased it’s take 77%.

Look for an intense battle between Where the Wild Things Are and Paranormal Activity next weekend with the former most likely ending up on top.
