National Board of Review 2009 Predictions

Oh, the NBR. Every year bloggers and film writers across the internet complain about how much of a joke the National Board of Review is. Most of the voting members aren’t journalists or members of the filmmaking community, but film “enthusiasts” and students. The are one of the oldest Awards bodies and they began with the stated purpose being “to endorse films of merit and champion the new “art of the people,” which was transforming America’s cultural life” (Wikipedia). Ironically, today the National Board Review is thought of as the easiest awards body to “buy.” That is, studios court them by paying for big lunches and gifts during their screenings. The studio that does the best job, gets the votes.

But, they are the first mainstream awards given out in the year and so people are sort of forced to take them seriously. Here are my predictions for the 2009 National Board of Review Awards:

Best Picture
Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire

Best Director
Clint Eastwood for Invictus

Best Actor
Matt Damon for The Informant!

Best Actress
Meryl Streep for Julie & Julia

Best Supporting Actor
Christoph Walz for Inglourious Basterds

Best Supporting Actress
Mo’Nique for Precious

Best Foreign Film
Broken Embraces

Best Documentary
Capitalism: A Love Story

Best Animated Feature

Best Ensemble Cast

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay
Up in the Air

Top 10 Films of the Year

An Education
Inglourious Basterds
The Lovely Bones
Public Enemies
Star Trek
Up in the Air

These predictions are totally meaningless and I would not be surprised if I didn’t get a single one right. The National Board of Review Awards will be announced early Thursday morning.

You gotta respect the Hurt Locker more. The awards (even if they are mainly noms) are coming.

I know they will be coming, but I thought not from the NBR because its not star studded or “studio” enough.
