The Twi-hards made their second and third trips out to the movie theatres this weekend to see their newest craze, New Moon. The heartthrob “vampire” film continues to destroy the competition as it easily surpasses the $200 million dollar mark, bringing in a 5-day total of $66 million.
Also having a dynamite Thanksgiving weekend is the latest Disney animated musical The Princess and the Frog, which opened on two screens and earned a stunning $356,000 per screen in the 3-day weekend. The film opened on only two screens, and significantly expands this coming weekend. The second highest per theatre average comes from Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces, which earned $58,000 per screen over the 3-day weekend, keeping it strong for a second week.
For every success story, there was a flop, however. Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox expanded to 2,033 theatres this weekend, but only made a dismal 3-day total of $7.02 million, placing it in 9th for the weekend. Also, doing less than impressive business was the Robin Williams and John Travolta vehicle Old Dogs, which received horrible reviews and was unable to surpass previous releases, placing 4th for the weekend.
