NEW ON DVD: Benny and Harvey

This week we have two that I missed in 2008 and one that I enjoyed, but didn’t laud as much as other critics have.

Three to See on DVD:

1) Last Chance Harvey (2008)

Directed By: Joel Hopkins

Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thomspon

In the glut of last year’s Oscar season I missed this one in theatres, so I am really excited to see this on DVD. Both of the leads got Golden Globe nominations for their performances and it scored a respectable 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dustin and Emma look like they have great chemistry and the film looks like a solid adult romance.

2) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – Criterion Collection (2008)

Directed By: David Fincher

Starring: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Tilda Swinton

A rare straight-to-Criterion release, this film utilized new technology to create movie magic – aging Brad Pitt from an old, crouching man, to an exuberant youth. Nominated for 13 Oscars last year and winner of 3 including best Visual Effects and makeup. The DVD/Blu-Ray has interviews and making of featurettes including a look at the technology used in the film.

3) Wendy and Lucy (2008)

Directed By: Kelly Reichardt

Starring: Michelle Williams, Walter Dalton, Will Oldham, Larry Fessendam

This indie was seen by few, but got great reviews from those that did see it. Scoring an impressive 80 on Metacritic, the film earned raves for Michelle Williams and was also nominated for Best Feature at the Spirit Awards.

Also New on DVD/Blu-Ray:
Chandni Chowk to China
