NEW ON DVD: Everything Old is New Again

This week sees the release of some great classic films on Blu-Ray and some not so great movies from earlier in 2009.

Three to See on DVD for May 12, 2009:

1) Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collections

In honor of last weekends release of the 11th Star Trek film, the previous 10 are being released on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, they are not available in one big set, but you can find each in smaller sets. For instance you can get the first six films, which includes The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, and The Final Frontier all in one set. This set also includes over 2 hours of new special features and over 12 hours of previously released content. Plus, there is a Star Trek trivia feature to test your Trekkie-ness. Wrath of Khan is the only of the six that has received a full restoration, but all of the films will still no doubt look great in Blu-Ray. If this weekend’s Star Trek film made you want more, this set is a great next step.

2) The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly / Big / Fargo (Blu-Ray)

I know it’s kind of cheating to put all three of these films into one number. Maybe this feature should really be called “Five to See”? Anyway, with these classic films getting released on Blu-Ray, there is nothing incredibly new, besides the fantastic 1080p picture. Most of the special features are the same that can be found on the respective DVD editions of the aforementioned films, but if you’re serious about your movies, Blu-Ray editions of these films would be worth a purchase.

3) Taken (2009)

Directed By: Pierre Morel

Starring: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen

I saw this movie early in 2009, when it was released. It’s not a terrible film, and was not bad entertainment for the month it was released. If you don’t mind a complete lack of story structure, and are interested in seeing the great Liam Neeson go on a mindless killing spree, then this movie might be worth checking out.

Also New on DVD/Blu-Ray:
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Major League (Blu-Ray)
There’s Something About Mary (Blu-Ray)
