The movie that is expected to kick-start next Summer’s box office has gotten its first official trailer today. Marvel Studios brings together Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, The Incredible Hulk and a slew of other comic book characters for The Avengers. Directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity) the film follows S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he attempts to assemble an ace team of superheroes to bring the world back from the edge of destruction.
The first trailer for the film premiered today on iTunes and it promises much of what you would expect from a mega-superhero franchise – huge CGI effects, teases of character development, and famous actors mugging for the camera. I may not be the best person to comment on the trailer as I was none too impressed with Thor or Iron Man 2 and haven’t even seen Captain America. However, from an outsiders perspective I will admit that this trailer does not look bad. It was difficult to hear the audio because I’m in a crowded coffee shop, but I was excited to see established leading men like Robert Downey, Jr. and Jeremy Renner sharing camera space.
I am most excited to see how the relationships of the heroes develop and how Whedon handles the confrontations between so many huge egos. I anticipate Downey, Jr. as Iron Man will steal the show as he is wont to do, but Renner as Hawkeye and Mark Ruffalo as the The Hulk will certainly put up a fight. I am withholding my full anticipation for the film until closer to its release, but for now it appears to be a solid start to the Summer and an easy sell to American audiences.

The Avengers will be in theatres in the U.S. on May 4, 2012.
