At the beginning of every year there is one question that lingers on everybody’s mind (by “everybody” I mean me and about a dozen others): what will this year’s Woody Allen movie bring? Will it be something smart and funny like Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Unexpected and dramatic like Match Point? A return to his 1970s form? Or a complete miss like Scoop?
All of Woody Allen’s movies are beginning to look more and more alike: an unhappy couple, an affair with huge age disparity, an A-list cast, sprinkle in some neurosis and a little Freud and you’ve got a picture. However, I never cease to get excited about his movies and each one still manages to feel fresh; like Woody Allen is trying something he’s never done before.
His 2010 film You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger appears to be vintage Woody Allen. The official U.S. trailer was premiered by Yahoo! Movies today and it has all of the elements that are familiarly Woody. Before we shrug this off as just another Allen movie, let’s not forget the sway that this man has at the Oscars. Not only has he received more Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay than anybody in history, but he has also lead several performers to Oscar gold as recently as 2008 when Penelope Cruz took home the Best Supporting Actress prize. The bottom line is that you can never discount Woody. His films always have the potential to be great.
Check out the trailer below and let me know if you’re thinking Oscar in the comments.
You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger will open in the U.S. on September 22, 2010.
