A film that is already one of my most anticipated of 2010 is Sylvester Stallone’s action film The Expendables. With a cast compiled of the top current and former action stars in the biz including Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, and of course Stallone, the movie promises to be the definition of “action”.
Today Empire has posted on-set footage from the film and it’s pretty interesting.
What I find funny is that the clip makes it look like a parody of Stallone’s past action films. Stallone mumbles direction to an overstocked crew while they look on perplexed and then all duck for cover and plug their ears as he points the gun at them. It of course has the stereotypical “stuntmen running from an explosion” scene, which would show up in a parody. Also, the end of the clip with Stallone running through a crowd of fans who are screaming “Rambo!” seems to me to show an older actor basking in the glory of his former greatness.
The movie is releasing in April of 2010 at which point we will find out if it is straight-forward action or if it flirts with parody (I’m hoping for the latter).
