Technically Emma Watson’s first film since the conclusion of the Harry Potter franchise was last year’s My Week with Marilyn, which put her in a rather thankless minor role. Her first real chance to show off her non-wizard acting chops comes this year with the release of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is written and directed by Steven Chbosky who also wrote the acclaimed Young Adult novel that the film is based on. It tells the story of an outcast Freshman trying to navigate through high school who is taken under the wing of two Seniors. Throughout the film he struggles with his own mental health, the suicide of his close friend, and his struggle to find acceptance with himself and others. The film stars Logan Lerman as the titular Wallflower, along with Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and Paul Rudd.
The film’s trailer debuted last night during the MTV Movie Awards and was posted online via Rope of Silicon. Based on the trailer, this appears to be a pretty conventional teenage serio-comedy, but based on the synopsis and the little that I know about the book, I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower will be released in the U.S. on September 14, 2012.
