While Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is in Cannes promoting his newest feature film Biutiful, Nike has premiered their latest commercial promoting the World Cup and directed by Inarritu. It is a 3-minute long star-studded effort featuring some of the greatest soccer (football) players in the world including Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Fabio Cannavaro, Franck Ribery, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott, Patrice Evra, Gerard Pique, Ronaldinho, Landon Donovan, Tim Howard and Thiago Silva. It also features a slew of pop culture references that include Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Homer Simpson.
I love it when famous directors take on commercials because you can see their stylistic stamp in a medium that you see everyday. Inarritu’s commercial features his signature non-sequential narrative, quick editing, and emphasis on human struggle. The whole 3-minute spot is pumped with adrenaline from start to finish and it captures the spirit of the World Cup brilliantly. It creates the feeling that every kick, every pass, and every goal is being watched with a microscope and will be analyzed and celebrated for months following the Cup. If this doesn’t get you excited for soccer (football), I don’t know what will.
The spot is going to be edited down to 30 and 60-second spots to run during the cup, but for now enjoy the full 3-minute video:
