On last week’s podcast Phil Kollar and I reviewed Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man while trying not to turn the whole thing into a compare and contrast with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies. Some elements were impossible not to compare, however, like the performances by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Maguire was 27-years old during the production of the first Spider-Man movie and Garfield was 28-years old during The Amazing Spider-Man, and both actors portrayed high school students. Both men played up the geeky awkwardness of Peter Parker with Garfield taking it slightly further than Maguire. Maguire might have looked the part of a high school outcast more than Garfield did, but both managed to seem much younger than their actual age.
So which performance did you like better? Complete the sentence below and be sure to explain your reasoning in the comments. Your answer might be shared on next week’s Film Misery podcast.
