POLL: Best Actress Bening vs. Portman

Last week post Telluride we had a little fun with the Best Actor category this year. 60% thought Colin Firth has a better chance at a nomination than James Franco. Now that we know that Natalie Portman got a major boost from Black Swan playing at both Telluride and Venice, let’s tackle the best actress category.

Before Black Swan premiered the front runner was Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right. Despite the category being very crowded this year, Bening was anointed not only best in show for her movie but early front runner status by most pundits.

For the purposes of this poll let’s forget about confirmed great turns from Lesley Manville (Another Year), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), Naomi Watts (Fair Game), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and upcoming movies for Oscar darlings like Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Hilary Swank (Conviction), and play Bening vs. Portman for the win.

The case for Bening: Will be her 4th nomination, veteran Hollywood royalty who some might consider overdue, her movie is a bonfide indie success with both critics and audiences, she’s playing gay (that did wonders for Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman to name just two). Against her is that the movie was a summer release, Moore is just as good opposite her and could siphon off some votes, she hasn’t really been out selling the movie, she’s playing gay (do I even need to say the words Brokeback Mountain).

As for Portman : confirmed festival huge buzz, Darren Aronofsky got Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Ellen Burstyn nominated, she looks like she’s the centerpiece and dominating force in her movie. Against her is that Aronofsky actors have yet to win, the movie might have elements of horror and sexuality that are too much for AMPAS, only her 2nd nomination and she’s not yet 30 (look how long they kept Winslet waiting).

So since the nomination for both seem to be assured tell us out of these two who do you think has a better shot at winning this year? Click on the link to take poll or hit the comments. Bonus question do you know the one movie that featured both Bening and Portman?
