August is halfway over, State fairs are beginning, and local department stores are packed with parents doing their back-to-school shopping – Summer is almost over. In movie theatres across the country I would assess this as an average Summer. There was only one movie that lit up the Box Office (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2), yet for the first time since 2007 no Summer movie will earn more than $400 million domestically. Most of the big tentpole releases were duds, but they were compensated for by some excellent limited releases (The Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris).
In my opinion, however, this Summer was lacking in that there were no movies that really unified audiences and critics alike in a sea of rejoicing. There was no Toy Story 3 or The Dark Knight; no Box Office hit that had Oscar pundits predicting it to go all the way in the Best Picture race. Some would argue that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 was that movie as it was almost unanimously adored by critics and audiences, but I wonder how many end of the year top ten lists it’s going to end up on? My guess would be not many.
This week’s poll allows you to decide which movie was this Summer’s gem. Was it Super 8, one of the Summer’s critical darlings? Or perhaps Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the biggest surprise of the Summer? Maybe it was Bridesmaids, the highest grossing non-sequel of the year? Or one of the Marvel movies Thor, Captain America, or X-Men: First Class?
