‘Princess and the Frog’ Rules the Box Office

In its first weekend in wide release, The Princess and the Frog, Disney’s much anticipated return to hand drawn animation, tops the Box Office. The film brought in approximately $25 million on 3,434 screens. The Blind Side continued its impressive Holiday season run by earning another $15 million this weekend and bringing its total to over $150 million. The other big debut this weekend, Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, did moderate business earning just over $9 million on 2,125 screens. The middle-America adult audience that was expected to come out for Invictus, decided to stick with what they know and increase the total for The Blind Side instead. Football beats rugby in the U.S. of A.

On the limited release side of things, The Lovely Bones comes in with the highest per theatre average of the weekend with $38,667 on 3 screens. However, the most impressive performance comes from Up in the Air, which expanded to 72 screens and just narrowly missed the top 10. After a week full of precursor support, Jason Reitman’s Oscar favorite will likely continue to expand its audience base and increase its earnings throughout the Awards season.
