Up and coming director Nicolas Winding Refn established himself as a talent to watch with 2008’s Bronson. The incredibly imaginative film about a psychotic inmate offered a breakout for not only Refn, but also actor extraordinaire Tom Hardy. Both men are now being heavily sought for Hollywood projects which have lead them to some excellent collaborative opportunities.
Drive, the latest film from Refn, was one of the most talked about films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and it even earned the newcomer the Best Director prize, an award he shares with legendary directors like Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Robert Altman. It is undeniable that he is a talent to watch and the first full trailer we get to see for Drive indicates that we are in for something great.
The film stars an amazing ensemble cast including Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Albert Brooks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, and Oscar Isaac. It is based on the novel by James Sallis about a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway car for underground criminal activity. Everything changes when a heist goes wrong and he becomes one of the most wanted men in Los Angeles.
The red-band trailer, which came online today courtesy of The Playlist, looks fantastic with a 1970s gritty action movie feel. Ryan Gosling looks restrained and fantastic in the film’s central role and Albert Brooks looks like he may be the supporting performance that shines. It is rare that an action movie gets taken seriously, but this film could perhaps be the exception with accolades already collected from one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. Will it fare as well with the Academy?

Drive will be in theatres in the U.S. on September 16, 2011.
