Satellite Awards Announce 2009 Nominations

ninecharacters

The Satellite Awards are given out by the International Press Academy, and unlike most precursors who desperately want to mimic the Oscars, these guys try their darndest to look like the Golden Globes. They were formerly known as the “Golden Satellites” and they seek to award the best that film has to offer while separating it into comedy and drama categories.

This is one of those interesting, but essentially meaningless precursors. They often make some bold choices that Oscar will eventually miss out on, but usually they cause more head scratching than applause. For instance this year they nominated Katherine Heigl for her role in The Ugly Truth and Sandra Bullock for her role in The Proposal (not Blind Side) for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical. Simultaneously they snub Gabourey Sidibe in the Best Actress race and Julianne Moore in the Supporting Actress race. They are also curiously making these nominations before having seen Invictus or Avatar, as neither film shows up in any category.

Nine leads the field with 11 nominations across the board. Other films that had surprisingly strong showings are The Stoning of Soraya M, which earned 3 nominations in top 8 categories and made it into their top 10 and District 9, which had a strong showing in the tech categories and earned Neill Blomkamp a Best Director nomination. Maybe those nods will get Oscars attention, but probably not.
