Screen Actors Guild Announces 2012 Nominees

Screen Actors Guild - ArgoBy now in the lead up to the Academy Awards, we’ve been seeing the same names over and over, and frontrunners are becoming apparent.  Members of the Screen Actors Guild, somewhat understandably, prefer to nominate members of the Screen Actors Guild for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.  So anyone expecting recognition for the incredible efforts of Emmanuelle Riva, Deanie Ip, Nadezhda Markina, Jean-Louis Trintignant, or Anders Danielson Lie should a) be very disappointed, and b) revise their expectations about what the SAG awards are meant to accomplish.

I don’t normally like it when critics declare an entire ceremony invalid because of one one nomination or oversight, but the lack of recognition for Joaquin Phoenix is a bit difficult to take seriously.  The names I listed above are not, to my knowledge, members of SAG or AFTRA, but Phoenix definitely is, and gave an immensely vulnerable, balls-out performance.  Well, maybe I should take my own advice and b) revise my expectations about what the SAG awards are meant to accomplish.

Anyway, the nominees are:

There are awards for television as well, but this website isn’t Television Misery, is it?  Still, for those interested, those nominations can be found at the SAG website.  All you really need to know about the TV side of things is that Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Louie are well-represented, and SAG seems as unimpressed with Lena Dunham’s reign of terror as I am.

The only Awards I really want to say anything about right now are the Lead Acting ones: right now, I’d say those are Day-Lewis’s and Chastain’s to lose.  I can’t seriously contemplate anyone else winning in either category.  But I’ll update these predictions as the day turn into weeks, and months, and the long, cold winter of Awards Season slogs ever onward.
